Ria Poynton

Bio

As a designer maker you are always looking to improve your work, while challenging yourself to be creative and constantly striving to do bigger and better pieces, never complacent and always eager to improve. This is something I have always desired to achieve and from a very early age, while growing up, I developed an interest in beaded jewellery. With the support of my artistic family background, I took to teaching myself jewellery, from this it has been an inevitable path that I wish to follow.

After completing my years at school, I went on to study three dimensional design at Plymouth University where I specialised as a designer maker achieving a BA hons. Eager to improve and learn more this was a mere starting point, I continued to study at Birmingham City University in design Craft, winning the BJA jewellery quarter award and the Hans Goldwyn award in the process. It is with this level of education, over the past five years where I have truly been developing my skills and design philosophy.

Taking inspiration from existing objects and geometric forms, this wire-based works are modelled on highly complex traditional filigree pieces. It is through this exploration that we are able to see the newest range in my collections the Telkari Laser, using the ideals of the wire work in picture form, these hand drawn images are then transformed on domed forms.
